Hello Friends!
As you all know I am in love with my grandchildren, so visits to North Carolina happen often so I can spend time with them and my daughter! During my last trip to New Bern, we were all a little sick, so we decided to hop into the car and just go for a drive, take photos and look closer at the landscape on the East Coast. We drove around the Neuse River and Pamlico Sound and much to my surprise everywhere I looked I was seeing Dwight Tryon paintings. Though he was actually from the North East – Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York – I felt I was living in Dwight Tryon Land, and for me it was like a kid in a candy shop. He has always been an artist that intrigued me with his subtleties and gentleness. The first time I saw his work was in the Freer Museum in Washington DC. His work is incredible! Here is a great book on him and his work if you are interested. An Ideal Country

Back to North Carolina! The east coast is so different from home. The humidity creates such depth and atmosphere and without the tall mountain backdrop that I am familiar with, you can see for miles. We happened to be out on a rainy day so the colors were saturated even more, the sky had moments of a beautiful warm greys and yellows opening up to brilliant blues. And the trees stood tall and proud!

Can you tell I’m excited? I’ve already completed two painting in this series and they have found their happy homes. I’m so excited to try more. I have a trip to Atlanta for the Olmsted Plein Air Invitational next month and then to Edisto Island to teach a workshop. Someone might mistake me for an east coast girl instead of a mountain girl!
